Welcome to the
No2DuchyPark action group website.
Duchy wins – but at what cost?
The Duchy of Lancaster was successful in it’s planning application
for the showground at Myerscough but Lancashire council tax payers
now look set to pick up the very substantial costs of policing the
Royal Lancashire Show (RLS) and other events held at the venue.
A senior police officer has indicated that they will seek to impose
only ‘minimal’ charges on the RLS. He gave no reason why the
Constabulary are choosing to ignore national guidelines on charging
policies which indicate that a full recovery should be made.
With at least 20 police officers earmarked for each day of the three
days the RLS operates, the policing costs look set to exceed
£50,000, and with other events to follow (the showground has
permission to stage events 28 days per year) the overall costs look
set to be horrendous.
Lancashire residents may well therefore question why they are being
asked to meet such costs, which could be recovered if the guidelines
were followed, when police resources are so stretched.
There
are also a number of issues which continue to concern a great number
of local residents. Therefore, the pressure group, supported by
hundreds of local residents and businesses, intends to ensure that
the continuing needs of the local community are heard and taken into
full account, especially during the preparation stages for the first
planned show in July 2008.
No2DuchyPark
will continue to represent the views of local residents and
businesses and plans to meet with interested parties during the next
few weeks
